The Week that Was ...

The statement YOU ARE ... is a powerful one.  

"You are good at maths", "You did a good job" stops at this. However, "YOU ARE PERSISTENT", "YOU ARE A CONFIDENT SPEAKER", "YOU ARE KIND" would all be statements children can hang on to and draw upon in a number of situations daily.

Ruth and I have been speaking to the class about their strengths.

Your child might have proudly brought home some hand written strength cards given to them by a classmate.

The energy level in the class doubled on Friday as children started offering 'Strength compliments' to each other. Ask your child the 5 strengths they identified with the class. They wrote these on an outline of a hand (holding on to your strengths)

We spent just 3 lessons experimenting with Augmented Reality. ( See last weeks blog for links to the apps)

• We experimented with the 2 trigger pictures
• We made story boards on paper
• We took the photos and told the story using Book Creator. (Book Creator is a powerful app to have on your iPAD if your child likes making up stories or keeping a diary on holidays. It allows for text, voice recording , video and photos and 1MLN are finding it easy to use these days)
• We thought about colour, layout and a good title

Did you see a very professional looking NON-Fiction poster arrive home mid week ?
If you take a look at the back you'll see your child's goals , also the things which they are most proud of in the posters. Share this with your child. 
I was impressed with their ability to use a computer to make the title and their ability to lay out the writing in an organised manner.
Ask your child about their PAPER CHOICES. ie why did they selected different paper for particular pieces of information.
(Paper choices definitely motivate more reluctant writers)

Ask your child what their next Non Fiction writing topic will be. (They have already selected something in which they are already an expert)

Ask your child how we used Match Attacks in Number Learning this week.

If your child was not in this Maths group , ask them about the strategies they are now using to solve problems with missing numbers.

 eg 75 + ? = 96

 Eclipse

Watching the shadows and the light change. We also had the Straits Times live stream on.

Ask your child to explain the Solar Eclipse on Tuesday morning. 

Ask them if they know what was happening to the sun, moon and earth to cause this. (We used tennis balls to model this and watched a very good lesson from youtube)
