A message from Jane Shearer: Grade 1 have been invited to sing at the family festival. They will be singing two songs that we have worked on in the music lessons. Parents have the option to sign their children up in the e-brief.
Maths night- look for the information about Maths night in the eBrief. A chance for you and your child to solve problems and puzzles in a fun and active way. One reluctant mathematician I taught was heard saying, "Thanks for making me come here mum , this is the best night ever !"

Career dress up - Spirit day 18th March. I'm not even sure what I want to do when I grow up !!! Consider these questions with your child: What do you hope to be passionate about when you are older? What means something to you? What makes you feel happy? What do you love to do ? Can you think of a way of representing this in costume on 18th March ?

The class are loving their Non fiction writing. Please ask your child if they would like to interview you, or anyone else, about their topic for their writing. If so then feel free to record this on a voice memo and send it to me. Your child will definitely use this in class.

As a celebration and extension on our Readers Theatre and Arts festival unit we had a super trip to Elephant and Piggly, a play written by Mo Willems. Please ask your child their opinion of this play (children are now very good at backing up their opinion with clear reasons)
This week when learning to BOUNCE BACK we considered various points of view, and thus our varied reactions, to one situation.
Have their been situations at home this week in which your child has considered a situation from more than one perspective ? (We also use the words 'Point of View') has their reaction been different than expected ?
I'm seeing a great deal more tolerance in class and people consider their classmates point of view on a situation.

Savaira had a lovely birthday celebration today with the class, thank you to all who sent in stationery and cards. Cupcakes were had in class and a cake and gifts were sent to the boarding house. She continues for 1MLN week of celebrations by spending Sunday evening at The Botanical Gardens concert with Salomé and her friends and family !

After a week of reinforcing adding and subtraction in class we played a game in which we 'stole' bundles tens from each other.
Ask your child to show you how to play this game. It's a fun way to reinforce number facts.
Ask your child what maths equipment they might visualise to help them to add and take away 10. (yes, we use the word visualise)
Ask your child what they visualise when they add and take away 9 and 11. Do they use their knowledge of adding and taking away to help with this.
Here is an example of how we use this knowledge...
- 6 + ? = 16 16 - ? = 6
- 16 + ? = 26 16 + ? = 25 16 + ? = 27
- 27 - ? = 17 27 - ? = 16 27 - ? = 18
Extension:
27 - ? = 7 27 - ? = 6 27 - ? = 8
However, we do expect the children to find an efficient strategy for solving this and to be able to explain this strategy to us.

Every month we spend a day or 2 exploring the calendar, finding out what is happening this month and using it to complete maths problems
eg.
We also spent a great deal of time exploring leap year. I discovered why February has fewer days then the rest. Ask your child if they remember why ?

The week ended with some time to develop passions...
- Plays were written
- Props were made for plays
- Construction took place - a whole city is developing
- Non fiction writing continued
- Augmented Reality apps were explored by some. (You'll love them, too). Both Quiver App and String App have free elements to them and are certainly enough for the children. I'm sure would love to explore these at home with you. You will need a printer unless your child brought home some of the TRIGGER pictures today.

We are eagerly awaiting a visit from a travelling Teddy Bear called Jessie. She ran away just like the Gingerbread man ran.
